so i guess we have to grow up and get a job?

Part of our trip to the wild west this summer was to solidify where the heck we want to move after Doug graduates. We have family all over the country, but we're both feeling good about moving westward. Dentistry is interesting because you usually can move to an area you like, work hard to make things work, and then you live in the same place the rest of your career. However, the big question is where to live. (WHERE?!)

It's been a heated discussion for us ever since we got engaged. We vowed to put it off until it was time to make that decision. Well, 5 years later... it's time to make that friggin decision.

So while we were in Washington and Colorado, we checked out some areas trying to look at them with different eyes... could we live here? Would Doug be able to do well here as a dentist? Would our children turn out okay if they lived here, or would they end up in prison? You know, standard questions.

Fortunately, I think we learned a lot on these trips. However, I think what we learned has only shown us how hard this is going to be on us. We feel tons of pressure, we both want the other to be happy yet we want to be happy ourselves, and we want to still like each other after this whole process is over.

So we're considering just hiring one of you to find him a job and us somewhere to live, and then you can present it all to us the day after his graduation.

And if we hate it? We'll just be mad at you, instead of each other. Let me know if you're interested.

You need to invest in one of those spinning globes. Spin it around, then point. Keep trying until you get somewhere in the states, and let that decide for you. :)

I personally think St.George, UT would be an excellent location for you guys :).

so exciting and yet so stressful at the same time. you will figure it out and im sure will be quite happy where ever you end up. If it were me, i'd go out west for sure!!!! although the selfish part of me wants to convince you to move to the Chi even though the weather here is a beast. still, we have wrigley field and deep dish pizza. something to consider.... :P

One of the few positive spins on a medical residency - it's still someone else telling us where to move! I am not looking forward to that final stage where we have to decide where to live for the rest of our lives. Talk about pressure! Good luck - and I would certainly agree with WA or CO since we have family in both and might be able to see you once in a while! :)

Your blog is so cute! I love Addy's cheeks!! We still have 4 years here as residents but we talk about it all the time! As of now, we are thinking Texas or Nevada but I'm sure that will change! Good Luck!

This is exactly what we're going through right now, too, so I feel your pain.

Let me know if you come up with a good system for choosing a place!

Spokane, WA. It's a perfect balance of country/city living, LDS ratio (with a temple for a bonus), four seasons, outdoor adventure, and it has lots of teeth. Nice people like it here. They raise their families, and the kids always seem to return to raise their own. That's saying something, right?

That is rough! I'm sure Scott and I will have similar discussions in 3 years, so let me know what you find out!

I'm pretty sure your only option at this point is consulting a psychic. I hear they're really accurate. there are a few in New Hope...

Since when did YOU become a grown up? I still look at my kids and think - who thought it was a good idea for ME to be a parent and responsible for the well-being of not just one, but two?? You should move to Santa Rosa. It's west coast, but a little bit country. Just saying...

Same issue here. My whole family is on the east, John's whole family is on the west, so we basically have to decide: McAllisters, or Babbels. SInce we can't do a decision like this, we decided (this is no joke) we're going to... NEW ZEALAND! At least, for the first year after he's done. They have all these traveling doctor programs, so we'll spend a year there and that's where Benson will do first grade. And that way, we do our own thing without hurting either family.

After that year, we're back to the drawing board!

By the way, I'm taking a train down to Richmond tomorrow and staying with Joyous. (Friday-Saturday 8/25-8/26.) I'll only be there about 24 hours, but if you have nothing to do, come on over to Joy's place! Chelsey will be there too. We'd love to see you!

Andrew will make the decision for you. Problem solved!! That is a toughie. How about we move where ever you go? Neighbors for life!

Good luck! I can say from experience that you will figure it out. You will get an answer. You will survive this. Then you'll have staff to deal with. Ahhhhhh!!
